On his way to Real Madrid, Mourinho says goodbye to Benfica: "It was an honor"

José Mourinho said goodbye to Benfica on social media. After the club confirmed the coach's departure to Real Madrid - and the consequent signing of Marco Silva -, the "Special One" left a message to the club.

"I would like to thank president Rui Costa for the opportunity given to me to work at the service of Sport Lisboa e Benfica. Representing this club was an honor and a privilege", he began by stating.

"I would also like to extend a word of recognition to all the professionals at Benfica Campus, whose professionalism, dedication and competence were exemplary", he added.

Mourinho returned to Benfica 25 years later. They end the season without titles and in third place in the league, a position that forces the team to compete in the qualifying phase for the Europa League.

He leaves the club undefeated in the championship, with 20 wins and 10 draws. In the Champions League, he recorded three wins and six defeats, being eliminated in the playoff against Real Madrid.

At the end, he left a message for the players:

"To the players with whom I had the pleasure of working, I leave a sincere thank you and best wishes for much personal and professional success. I carry with me the conviction that, more than just a moment, we created a lasting bond: my player one day, my player forever", concluded Mourinho, without addressing any words to the fans.
