Young people defy rural exodus and take over family businesses in the interior of SP

The number of young people between 15 and 24 years old living in the rural area of Araçoiaba da Serra (SP) plummeted by 66% in two decades. The advance of the rural exodus raised alarms among local producers about who will manage the properties and crops in the future.
To try to reverse this trend and keep new generations in the countryside, the "Young Agro Entrepreneur" course, from the National Rural Learning Service (Senar), began training children of producers to continue the families' legacy.
Producer Paulo Mota experienced this challenge up close. His son, Raphael, decided to go against the statistics and chose to remain on the field. Currently, the young man works on a day-to-day basis on the farm alongside his father, who guides his steps in production.
The Senar initiative focuses on young people like Raphael and student João Paulo, son of producers Jomar and Regina Bello. According to instructor Valber Rodrigo de Oliveira Santos, the objective of the classes is to show that modern agriculture requires management and offers a promising career for youth.
The course focuses on changing the view on rural entrepreneurship by highlighting that work in the field goes far beyond manual effort. With the arrival of technologies such as the use of drones and digital management systems, the sector has attracted young people due to the opportunities for innovation and technology.
