Fernanda Torres recalled the controversy involving Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón during the "I'm Still Here" campaign for the 2025 Oscars.
In an interview with Conversa com Bial, shown last Tuesday (7), the actress recalled the accusation made by Emilia's protagonist Pérez that there would be a team working against her.
"Six to eight months of campaigning for the Oscar, without going home. When we arrived at the campaign, we were nobody, we were an underdog. It had everything. The day after the Golden Globes, Los Angeles caught fire. I had to run away", he said.
Afterwards, the actress recalled the episode involving Karla Sofía Gascón and said that she was surprised by the accusations while trying to rest after the marathon of commitments. (video of the interview here)
"I went into a hotel room, in a beautiful place to rest, I 'read infinitely' [the infinite feed of the networks]. The actress of Emilia Pérez enters saying that I had a team working against her. Then I had another one [imitates a person feeling ill]. Nowadays it's like that. Nowadays, giving an interview is a danger, it's a certain cancellation", he stated.
The statement refers to the controversy that marked the final stretch of the Oscar campaign, when Karla Sofía Gascón suggested, in an interview, that people linked to Fernanda Torres' team were promoting attacks against her on social media.
The speech had international repercussions and ended up increasing tension between the campaigns of the two films. Recall the chronology of the facts below.

Since before the announcement of the Oscar nominees, on January 23, "Emilia Pérez" and its protagonist were already seen as the great rivals of "I'm still here" and Fernanda Torres in the awards.
For this reason, many Brazilians directed an unreasonable amount of hate towards the production and the actress - who saw her social networks invaded by attacks from Fernanda's fans. In an interview with g1 on the 21st, during her visit to Brazil to promote the film, Karla asked for help with good humor:
"Fernanda, please, a hug. I love you very much. Help me with these people."

In a video published on Instagram, Fernanda Torres praised her colleague and he recalled how he met Karla at a party in Hollywood "with the biggest gathering of incredible actors I had ever seen."
According to Fernanda, it was the Spanish woman who helped her at the party and introduced her to her colleagues.

"It was affectionate, solidarity." In the post, she asked that Brazilians not take the dispute between the two to life outside the awards:
"'Let's not treat anyone badly and create something that is against each other, for the love of God. I am forever grateful to Sofía Gascón. She is wonderful in 'Emilia Pérez'."
January 28: Karla makes accusations
During her visit to Brazil, before the announcement of the Oscar nominees, Karla Gascón accused "people who work in Fernanda Torres' environment" of speaking ill of her work and of "Emilia Pérez".
The statements gained repercussion last Tuesday (28), because of an interview published by the newspaper "Folha de S.Paulo". "What I don't like is that there is a social media team that works around all these people trying to diminish other people's work, like mine, or that of the film, because that doesn't go anywhere," she said. In an interview with "Variety" magazine published this Thursday (30), Karla went back on the accusations, and recanted. "I'm a big fan of Fernanda Torres and it's been wonderful getting to know her over the last few months. In my recent comments, I was referring to the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media, which I unfortunately continue to experience," she said.
"Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly connected to her has been anything but supportive and extremely generous." started to go viral on X (formerly Twitter). Rescued by Canadian journalist Sarah Hagi, the 2020 and 2021 publications have racist and xenophobic content. They talk about Islam, the George Floyd case and inclusion in the Oscars.

"I'm sorry, is it just my impression or are there more Muslims in Spain? Every time I pick up my daughter from school, there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their ankles. Next year, instead of English, we will have to teach Arabic", wrote the actress in a post from November 2020.
When mentioning George Floyd, a black man killed by a white police officer with knees on her neck, in 2020, Karla wrote: "I really think that very few people cared about George Floyd, a drug-addicted criminal, but his death served to demonstrate once again that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys without rights and consider police officers to be murderers."
In 2021, the actress criticized the Oscar awards. "More and more, the Oscars seem like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn't know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration [anti-racist movement] or 8M [feminist movement]."
January 31: Karla apologizes (again)
This Friday (31), the actress released a statement, apologizing for the old messages revealed in recent days.

"I want to acknowledge the conversation surrounding my previous social media posts that have caused pain."
"As someone from a marginalized community, I know this suffering very well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain to. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe that light will always triumph over darkness."
Karla has deleted her account on Oscar.
"Just hours ago, "Emilia Pérez" was an Oscar favorite, with 13 nominations and the support of the world's biggest streaming service. Now, it's a warning about the dangers of building a warm and fuzzy narrative around a reality that is much more complicated," says "Variety" magazine in a text published this Thursday.
The article makes a counterpoint between Karla Gascón's behavior in real life and the plot of moral redemption exposed in the film. For "Variety", the case "puts at risk not only Gascón's own campaign, but that of the film that bears her character's name and is therefore inseparable from her".
