Minister says meetings with the US about tariffs continue, but rejects including ethanol in negotiations: 'Risk for the Northeast'

Minister Márcio Elias Rosa (Development, Industry and Foreign Trade) stated this Tuesday (7) that the Brazilian government continues to negotiate with North American authorities to avoid the imposition of new tariffs against Brazilian products by the Donald Trump administration.
According to the minister, technical teams from the two countries met this Tuesday and there is the expectation of a new meeting - this time with the US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer - before an American decision on new tariffs against Brazil next week.
Márcio Elias Rosa declared that, although negotiations are ongoing, the Brazilian government rejects the idea of including Brazil's tariff reduction on North American ethanol on the negotiating table.
For the minister, making concessions on this topic would represent a "risk" for the Northeast region, which has a strong presence of the sugar and alcohol industry.
The idea was defended by Flávio Bolsonaro (RJ), PL's pre-candidate for President, in a statement sent to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR). For Flávio, the tariff relationship between the two countries in relation to ethanol and sugar is "asymmetric" and the two countries can reach a zero tariff agreement.
According to Márcio Elias Rosa, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has already instructed his team to leave ethanol out of the negotiations.
"Never [make concessions on ethanol]. in this negotiation and, moreover, it cannot be dealt with without us dealing with the issue of sugar, which is overtaxed in the USA", stated the minister.

"This is a very important sector, especially in the Northeast of the country. Ethanol production and, eventually, the opening of the North American ethanol market would pose. At risk, above all, the production of ethanol in the Northeast of the country", added Márcio Elias Rosa.
