Norwegian Federation confirms support for ethics complaint against Infantino

The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) formally confirmed support for a complaint filed against FIFA president Gianni Infantino for an alleged violation of the entity's political neutrality rules. The information was released this Tuesday by the president of the federation, Lise Klaveness.

In a press conference before the Norwegian team's trip to the World Cup, Klaveness stated that the NFF's letter of support has already been officially sent. According to her, the initiative generated political discomfort within the main world football entity.

Previously, Klaveness had already asked FIFA to withdraw the award to preserve its political neutrality. The organization came under fire after awarding an inaugural peace prize to United States President Donald Trump during the 2026 World Cup draw in December.

The complaint was presented by the human rights organization FairSquare to the FIFA Ethics Committee. The document questions Infantino's decision to award a "peace prize" to Donald Trump. The Norwegian federation requested that the committee assess whether the FIFA president violated the entity's statutes related to political neutrality through the award and actions associated with it.

"We have already sent the letter, and this is generating some political reactions," Klaveness told reporters. "But it was sent, and this stage is complete. We will follow the case, move forward, request meetings and gain strength on this issue as soon as the World Cup ends."

Klaveness also revealed that FIFA representatives expressed concern about the NFF's position during a meeting held in Budapest last weekend, a period that coincided with the Champions League final.

"There is no doubt that the charter is seen as something problematic when it comes from a member association," he said. "But it was a good meeting, and we had constructive discussions about why this is considered problematic and why it is important for Norway to support FairSquare on this issue."

The NFF chose to send the letter independently, without pressuring other national federations to formally join the complaint.

"We have received support from other federations, but we are sending this letter alone," said Klaveness.

The Reuters agency contacted FIFA seeking a position on the case. So far, there has been no response.
