Norway breaks World Cup goals record after victory over Iraq

Norway's 4-1 victory over Iraq, this Tuesday (16), in Boston, made the team's history. For the first time in World Cup participation, the Norwegians scored four goals in the same match.

The feat was achieved in the team's debut in the 2026 edition of the tournament. Erling Haaland was the highlight of the match, scoring twice. Ostigard and Thorstvedt completed the rout.

Before the duel against the Iraqis, Norway's biggest offensive record in a World Cup match was two goals. The number had been reached on two occasions, both in the 1998 edition, in France: in the 2-2 draw with Morocco and in the 2-1 victory over Brazil, still in the group stage.

With the four goals scored in Boston, the team set a new record in the main competition in world football.

In addition to the historic milestone, the result placed Norway at the top of Group I at the end of the first round. The team has three points, ahead of France, Senegal and Iraq.

The performance reinforces expectations surrounding the generation led by Haaland. After conceding a draw in the first half, Norway reacted quickly, regained the lead before the break and built the rout in the final stage.

The Norwegians' next match will be against Senegal, on June 22nd. A new victory could put the team in a comfortable position in the fight for a place in the round of 16 of the World Cup.
