Newcastle striker scores DR Congo's first World Cup goal

Yoane Wissa scored this Wednesday (17) the first goal in the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo in World Cups. The unprecedented feat took place in the duel against the Portuguese team, in first-half stoppage time, at the NRG Stadium, in Houston, in the United States.

Wissa, Newcastle striker, received a cross from Masuaku. He rose higher than Portugal's marking and managed to put the ball in the back of the net, beating goalkeeper Diogo Costa. At 29 years old, the striker made history by scoring DR Congo's unprecedented goal in the World Cup.

The country had already participated in the 1974 edition, at the time under the name of Zaire. At the event, the African team was in the same group as the Brazilian team. Zaire was defeated 3-0 by Brazil, lost 2-0 to Scotland and suffered a 9-0 defeat by Yugoslavia.

Currently, the Democratic Republic of Congo is part of Group K of the 2026 World Cup. Their opponents at this stage are Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan. Later today, Uzbekistan and Colombia debut in the 2026 World Cup, at 11pm (Brasília time), at the Mexico City Stadium, also in the first round of Group K.
