New York will give away 1,000 World Cup tickets for $50

New York will offer 1,000 discounted tickets to World Cup matches in the city region through a draw aimed at residents who would otherwise be unable to afford the costs. The announcement was made this Thursday (21) by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

During an event in the Little Senegal neighborhood, Mamdani stated that the city hall entered into a partnership with the organizing committee NYNJ to make tickets available, after prices for the competition reached values considered unaffordable.

"There are countless New Yorkers desperate to watch a World Cup match but simply can't afford it," said the mayor.

Tickets will cost US$50 (about R$250) and will be distributed between five group stage games and two knockout matches at MetLife Stadium, in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The city hall will also offer free transportation to and from the stadium.

The draw will open on Monday (25), at 10am. Residents can participate once a day, with a limit of 50,000 daily registrations. Winners will be announced on June 3 and will be able to purchase up to two tickets.

To avoid irregular resale, tickets will be non-transferable and will be delivered directly to the winners at the bus boarding point. Eligibility will be verified to ensure only city residents can purchase tickets.

United States national team forward Tim Weah and councilman Yusef Salaam participated in the announcement.
