The Netherlands registered an unprecedented feat in the match against Japan, in the teams' debut at the World Cup. For the first time in the history of the Dutch team at the World Cup, no player who started the clash between the starters plays for a team from his own country.

Interestingly, two players from the Japanese national team play in the Eredivisie, the first division of the Dutch championship. They are: Ayase Ueda and Tsuyoshi Watanabe. Both defend Feyenoord.

Among the 11 chosen by coach Ronald Koeman to start the game against Japan, eight play in the Premier League (England), two in Serie A (Italy) and one in La Liga (Spain).

Highlight for Liverpool. The English have three players: Cody Gakpo, Virgil Van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch.
