Netherlands redirects warship to Hormuz for possible mission

The Netherlands reported this Friday (19) that they redirected a frigate to the Strait of Hormuz, in order to participate in a possible international mission in the region.

The air defense frigate is currently in the Indo-Pacific region and will take several weeks to reach the Strait of Hormuz region, Defense Minister Dilan Yesilgoz said in a letter to parliament.

Oil shipments through the strait have increased since the United States and Iran signed a ceasefire agreement this week, despite security concerns voiced by officials in the shipping and insurance sectors, who have called for the urgent deployment of mine clearance ships to the waterway.

France and the United Kingdom have been pushing for plans for a multinational naval mission, but diplomats say Iran has signaled strong opposition to any foreign military presence in the waterway.

Germany announced on Thursday the sending of two ships to the Red Sea in preparation for a possible military mission in the strait.
