Netanyahu says he ordered the Israeli army to occupy 70% of the Gaza Strip

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared this Thursday (28) that he ordered the army to take control of 70% of the Gaza Strip, which means effectively disregarding the terms of the ceasefire with the Islamist movement Hamas, in force since October.
"We have Hamas on the ropes," said Netanyahu, adding that Israeli troops currently control 60% of the Gaza Strip, an increase from 50% before the ceasefire came into force.

"My order is to move to 70%", declared the prime minister at a press conference in the occupied West Bank, part of which was broadcast on the Channel 12 website.
Netanyahu's announcement It comes amid violence in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli army continues its bombing campaign.

Israel and Hamas accuse each other of violating the ceasefire that came into force in October, after two years of war triggered by the terrorist attack on Israeli territory in October 2023.
The first part of this truce, negotiated under pressure from the United States, allowed the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners.
The implementation of the second phase envisaged the disarmament of Hamas and a gradual withdrawal of the Israeli army from that territory, an advance that, for weeks now, has seemed unlikely to materialize.
According to the terms of the ceasefire, Israeli forces were to withdraw beyond the so-called "yellow line", which separated the area controlled by Hamas from the part of the territory occupied by the Israeli army, which corresponded to just over 50%.
Netanyahu had already announced, on May 15, that the army had expanded its control over the Gaza Strip to 60% of the territory.
In the area under Hamas authority, more than 2 million Palestinians live in overcrowded conditions, suffering a humanitarian situation that remains "catastrophic", several NGOs reported on May 22, accusing Israel of not fulfilling its obligations.
