Nelson Motta reveals behind the scenes of Bob Marley's historic visit to Brazil in 1980

Bob Marley's visit to Brazil in 1980 continues to produce remarkable stories. This time, the person who recalled details of that historic moment was the journalist and music producer Nelson Motta, who spoke behind the scenes of the visit of the biggest name in reggae to Rio de Janeiro.

Nelson Motta explained that Bob Marley came to the country because of the arrival of the German record company Ariola in Brazil. The company promoted a launch party at the traditional Noites Cariocas space, in Morro da Urca, a place directly linked to the cultural history of Rio.

During the event, Nelson acted as a kind of host for Bob Marley. The meeting brought together big names in Brazilian music and became a legendary episode for fans of reggae, MPB and musical culture.

Despite expectations, Bob Marley did not perform at the party. According to Nelson Motta, the artist did not have a work visa to officially sing in Brazil, so he ended up just circulating around the event, talking, being observed and arousing enormous curiosity among the guests.

The party was attended by major national music artists. Among the artists mentioned were Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, Clara Nunes, Moraes Moreira, Ney Matogrosso and other key names in MPB.

Nelson Motta also recalled another curious moment from Marley's time in Brazil: a football match. The Jamaican icon participated in a football match at the Chico Buarque camp, alongside several Brazilian artists. According to the producer, Bob Marley was very friendly during the visit.
