Musk sought settlement with OpenAI before trial, lawsuit shows

Elon Musk contacted OpenAI president Greg Brockman to gauge interest in a settlement two days before the start of a trial in the United States in which the billionaire accuses the creator of ChatGPT of having betrayed its original mission of developing non-profit artificial intelligence.
When Brockman suggested that both parties drop their complaints, Musk reportedly said: "By the end of this week, you and Sam will be the most hated men in America. If you insist, it will be," according to a new document incorporated into the lawsuit after being presented on Sunday. The billionaire was referring to Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI.
Musk said last Thursday that he read only the title of a 2017 term sheet related to OpenAI's move from a nonprofit structure to a for-profit organization.
The billionaire claims that OpenAI's leaders improperly profited from his charitable contributions when the company was still operating as a nonprofit.

The founder of SpaceX is seeking leadership changes at OpenAI and $150 billion in compensation from the company and Microsoft, one of the ChatGPT creator's biggest investors.
The trial before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, California, began on April 28 and is expected to last several weeks, with a verdict likely as early as the middle of this month.
Musk, his lawyer and OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
