Municipal buses in Rio stop accepting cash at the end of the month; understand

The municipal bus system in the city of Rio de Janeiro will now accept payments via Pix, in addition to debit and credit cards. According to the Municipal Transport Department, buses will no longer accept cash from the 30th of this month.

According to the ministry, the modernization of the payment system was implemented to increase security on buses, end the dual role of drivers, reduce fraud, increase transparency in the use of public subsidies and speed up passenger boarding.

Despite the change, the use of cash will not be completely ruled out, as cash payments will continue to be available for purchasing and recharging cards.

Cash top-up will continue to be done at self-service machines (ATMs) in Jaé, at accredited points spread across the city and at the ticket offices of the BRT terminals.

In addition, starting next Tuesday (26), the single green card, charged for a single trip, will be available for purchase in cash at 700 newsstands in the city.

Other details of the operation will be released by Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, in a press conference, on Monday (25), at 8am, at the Operations and Resilience Center (COR).

MPRJ Investigation
The Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro opened a civil inquiry on May 15 to investigate the decision by Rio City Hall to end cash payments for tickets on municipal buses.

The MPRJ requested that the Secretariat clarify the technical and administrative reasons that supported the measure. The agency also asked for information about the existence of alternatives for users without access to digital media.
