The rise in meat prices weighs heavily on the World Cup barbecue
The barbecue could be saltier for Brazilian fans this year - and not just because of the meat. Common items at meetings to support Brazil in national team games have seen an increase greater than inflation, of around 12%, recorded since the last World Cup, in 2022.
To fill the grill, only the sausage has not become more expensive. Chicken rose by 18%, garlic bread by 15%, and beef by 9%.

Items The most popular ones followed the same variation. Canned sausage increased by 26%; snacks, such as chips, became 21% more expensive; microwave popcorn rose 20%; ready-made snacks, 19%; and peanuts, 17%.

The estimates were made, at the request of BBC News Brasil, by Scanntech, a reference company in the retail sector for compiling and analyzing tax coupons issued by small, medium and large markets across the country.
Values can vary due to several factors, from the location and supermarket chain chosen by the consumer to the brand of the products and, in the case of beef, the cut purchased. Therefore, the company prefers not to disclose the average prices of each item.
The percentage increases are approximate values, calculated based on a base of tax coupons that, according to Scanntech, takes into account the emissions of three out of every four establishments in the sector.

Consumption should not fall, but the shopping basket should change
Scanntech spokesperson and marketing director, Priscila Ariani says she does not believe that consumption focused on the World Cup will fall because of rising prices.
On the contrary: this time, most games take place at night for Brazilians, which could intensify meetings and facilitate the participation of those who normally cannot leave work to watch a match held in the middle of the afternoon, for example.
But the average shopping basket for a meeting in front of the television should change, she adds. According to estimates from Scanntech, which provides supermarkets with intelligence data to boost revenue, the sector's expectation is that barbecue grills will have more chicken than beef.
This is due to several factors. The first, says the executive, is that, although chicken has registered a higher average price increase than beef, it still costs much less and, given the debt and loss of purchasing power of families, it tends to be in greater demand.
But there are also reasons that go beyond price. Among them is the fact that chicken is less fatty.
The characteristic, says Ariani, pleases both those looking for sources of protein considered healthier and people undergoing treatment with weight-loss pens, known for causing nausea when the patient consumes fatty cuts - in general, beef, even the noble ones, due to the intramuscular fat. says.
This concern with healthy habits may seem paradoxical when talking about a shopping basket aimed at socialization, recognizes the executive.
Still, she states that it is possible to maintain products associated with the celebration without abandoning food care.
In this context, Scanntech observes, for example, an increase in the consumption of light beers, which tend to have a higher price, but at the same time are consumed in smaller quantities.
What explains the rise in prices
For André Braz, coordinator of the Price Indexes at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) and specialist in monetary policy and inflation, it is difficult to explain in a simple way There is a widespread increase in the prices of these products.
Several factors influence price formation, he explains. The first is the demand itself. When demand increases, as usually occurs on the eve of and during major sporting tournaments, values tend to rise.
The diagnosis is reinforced by a study by Scanntech, which recorded sales, on average, 24% higher in the days leading up to games of the 2022 World Cup and competitions played last year, such as the Club World Cup, the Intercontinental Cup and the Libertadores.
But there are factors that go beyond demand, especially in the beef market, which faces a supply restriction at the at the same time that exports remain strong, says the economist.
Brazil broke a record for fresh beef exports last year, even with the surcharges imposed by American President Donald Trump.

3.50 million tons were shipped, an increase of 20.9% compared to 2024, and US$ 18.03 billion handled, equivalent to around 40.1% more than invoiced in the previous year, according to the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries (Abiec), which compiled the data based on information from the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services.
But the expert states that there is, indeed, a common element to all these products and that contributes to making almost everything on supermarket shelves more expensive: logistics.
"The meat sector drinks, for example, faces important costs related to packaging, logistics and distribution. Inputs such as aluminum, glass, plastic and transport have a significant impact on price formation and can pressure adjustments above average inflation", he says.
