MME says it will publish battery auction ordinance in 15 days

The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, stated this Thursday (22) that the government will publish the battery auction ordinance within 15 days and that the event will be held in 2026.

"We set aside a substantial amount, but as it is the first, we couldn't stop going around the world talking about the subject so that it can be done properly", said Silveira during his participation in the Esfera Forum.

According to the minister, the government is still discussing the level of local content requirements that will be applied to the auction. According to him, the definition is considered relevant to stimulate the supply chain and national industry.

"Local content is important for the supply chain and for the national industry", he stated.

Silveira also justified why the storage systems auction was not held before the LRCap (Capacity Reserve Auction), aimed at contracting thermal and hydroelectric plants. "The battery auction only worked with government subsidies and we don't have those resources," said the minister.

The holding of a specific auction for batteries has been defended by agents in the electricity sector as an alternative to increasing the flexibility of the electrical system in the face of the growth of intermittent renewable sources, such as solar and wind.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy, however, had already been announcing the holding of the event since 2024, without the bidding having been effectively launched until now.
