Milan fires Allegri after failure to miss out on Champions League

AC Milan fired coach Massimiliano Allegri after the team's collapse at the end of the season, classified by the board as an "unequivocal failure". The club only finished fifth in Serie A and was left out of the next Uefa Champions League.

The announcement was made this Monday (25) by Milan.

In addition to Allegri, executives Giorgio Furlani, Igli Tare and Geoffrey Moncada were also dismissed as part of a broad shake-up planned to restructure the football department with a view to next season.

For Milan, seven-time European champions and last winners in 2007, profound changes are coming. Club owner Gerry Cardinale faces intense pressure after angry fans displayed banners reading "Go home: shame" outside the manager's hotel and at the San Siro stadium.

The 2-1 defeat to Cagliari, which confirmed fifth place and absence from the Champions League for the second year in a row, should trigger an immediate overhaul of the board, according to the Italian press.
