"Michael" surpasses "Oppenheimer" and becomes the greatest biopic in history
The film "Michael" became the highest-grossing biopic of all time, with US$977.4 million (more than R$5.06 billion) grossed. With this, the film surpasses "Oppenheimer", which grossed US$ 975.8 (R$ 5.05 billion) million during the Oscar season.
The production that tells the story of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, had already become the highest-grossing musical biopic, beating the record of "Bohemian Rhapsody", which tells the life of Freddie Mercury and the formation of the band Queen. Now, "Michael" has also surpassed non-musical biopics, such as "Oppenheimer".
Michael Jackson grossed US$9.2 million (R$47.6 million) at the global box office last weekend. The film, starring Jackson's nephew, Jafar Jackson, in the lead role, is expected to reach the billion-dollar mark worldwide. If that happens, it will be the second film to reach that milestone in 2026, after Universal/Illumination's "Super Mario Galaxy."
In "Michael", produced by Lionsgate, the public learns about the life trajectory and legacy of Michael Jackson (Jaafar Jackson), going through his beginnings in the Jackson Five, until reaching the title of King of Pop. The production went through challenges and postponements, being forced to spend US$50 million (R$258.85 million) on reshoots after the singer's heirs left aside an important chapter of his life.
