"Michael" becomes Universal Pictures' biggest release in Brazil

The biopic "Michael", which tells the story of the personal and professional life of singer Michael Jackson, became the biggest release in the history of Universal Pictures in Brazil.

According to studio data, the film reached 6.8 million spectators in national cinemas and grossed more than R$155 million at the box office to date.

With its great domestic success, the film surpassed the values obtained by "Despicable Me 4" (R$152.2 million), "Fast and Furious 7" (R$141.8 million) and "Fast and Furious 10" (R$135.6 million), the biggest so far.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, known for his work on "Training Day" and "Invasion of the White House", the plot features Juliano Valdi and Jaafar Jackson as Michael at different stages of his life.

A few days after being released, the biopic already exceeded US$700 million in sales, which made the production the second highest-grossing film of 2026. According to internal sources, interviewed by Variety magazine, a sequel to the film would be in production and most of the scenes are already being recorded.

"We believe that we already have 25 to 30% of a second film recorded from the previous production, and obviously that will have some [financial] benefit in the end, but we will make sure that we make a great and satisfying film for global audiences once again", said Adam Fogelson, head of cinema at Lionsgate, to the North American portal.
