Jonathan David leads Canadian rout
One of the hosts of the World Cup put on a show in front of the fans.
Canada thrashed Qatar 6-0 and achieved their first victory in the World Cup with a gala performance from Jonathan David.
The striker scored three times and became only the second player to score a hat-trick in this World Cup. Now, he shares the competition's top scorer with Lionel Messi.
Switzerland runs roughshod in Group B
In Group B, Switzerland was also unaware of its opponent.
The European team beat Bosnia 4-1 and secured a peaceful victory from the first minutes. The highlight was the goal that opened the scoring and helped build another rout in the round.
South Africa draws at the end
The Czech Republic saw victory slip away in the final minutes.
The Czechs opened the scoring in a move that is the team's trademark: the throw-in launched directly into the area. But South Africa reacted and sought a draw, closing the match 1-1.
Mexico wins and guarantees an early place
Another host that made the party was Mexico.
With the 1-0 victory over South Korea, the Mexicans achieved their second triumph in the World Cup and guaranteed an early qualification for the next phase.
The match had a hero and a villain. The Mexican goalkeeper shone with great saves, while Kim Seung-gyu missed the shot that led to the only goal of the game.
In the stands, the fans also put on a show. Characters like Chiquinha, Chaves and Chapolin Colorado appeared in costume and helped transform Guadalajara into a great party stage.
