Mexico: Police block teachers' march towards World Cup stadium

Mexican police blocked, this Tuesday (9), a march of teachers heading to the stadium in Mexico City, where the opening of this week's World Cup will be held. The protests intensified pressure on the government on the eve of the FIFA tournament.

Members of the CNTE union marched through Mexico City towards the CDMX Stadium, where a large police contingent blocked the way with trucks, cranes and barricades.

Some protesters clashed with a truck and spray-painted the vehicle during the standoff.

Union members said they demanded dialogue with the government on reforms to pensions, salaries and the education sector, rejecting accusations that the protests sought confrontation.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Tuesday that the government would not repress the protest and guaranteed that the opening ceremony would be held on Thursday (11).

"It's a situation in which they want to give the impression that Mexico is going through a major social upheaval. And that's not true," she said at her morning press conference.

The demonstrations are part of protests that have affected parts of downtown Mexico City and the area around the Zócalo, where preparations continue for the World Cup events, scheduled to begin this month.
