Meta goes back and blocks AI feature after negative repercussions
Meta IA reversed itself this Friday (10) on its decision to implement an artificial intelligence tool that would enable the creation of images from photos published by users.
Muse Image had been announced last Wednesday (8) as an image generation tool developed by Meta Superintelligent Labs. However, the public reacted badly and criticized the fact that the platform used images without users' consent.
On Instagram, for example, the tool would allow anyone to request the generation of a new AI photo based on images from any public account where the user is over 18 years old. The possibility would pose serious privacy and consent risks.
Amid public reaction, Meta only informed that the resource is no longer available, but did not comment on the debate regarding liability for violated privacy issues.
"Earlier this week, we announced that one of the ways to generate images in Meta AI would be by tagging public Instagram accounts with @ for reference. Our intention was to provide a useful creative tool and give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We received feedback that this feature did not achieve the goal, so it is no longer available," says the company's official statement.
Another point that caught users' attention was the fact that, if someone used content to generate an image through AI, the profile used as a reference would not receive notification.
Platform accountability
Amid the rise of platforms and social networks, the discussion about holding big techs accountable in the online environment has increasingly increased.
In the face of measures such as Meta's attempt to launch Muse Image, we see the STF (Supreme Federal Court) trying to stipulate standards so that digital platforms establish rules for a safe environment.
On June 17, the Court adjusted the thesis of responsibility for social networks, altering the Marco Civil da Internet, which establishes parameters for technology companies.
Thus, the Supreme Court reviewed points on the accountability of content providers, self-regulation, platform representatives in the country, in addition to other standards.
