The Argentine team defeated Algeria 3-0 this Tuesday (16), in Kansas City, in a duel valid for the first round of Group J of the World Cup. Scorer of the three goals in the match, Lionel Messi spoke about being emotional after finding the net for the first time in this edition of the tournament.

"I cried after the first goal, yes... but it was something completely unrelated to football. I went through some difficult days, but I'm grateful to the entire delegation and my teammates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength," said the 38-year-old midfielder.

Messi also analyzed the debut clash against the Algerians. "I'm feeling well, it's important to start by winning a difficult match like this, it's never easy to play in your first World Cup match. It was a difficult game in the first half, and then we managed to take the lead. In the second half we put on an important performance", he concluded.

The Argentine star's three goals took him to the top of the ranking of top scorers in the history of the World Cup. He equaled German Miroslav Klose and reached the mark of 16 goals, surpassing names like Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappé.

Argentina returns to the pitch next Monday (22), at 2 pm (Brasília time), where they face Austria. The game takes place at AT&T Stadium, in Dallas, United States.
