Lionel Messi's name dominated most of Argentina's press conferences before their World Cup debut, even without the star appearing in front of the press. Both coach Lionel Scaloni and defender Nicolás Otamendi reinforced the captain's importance for the team.

At 38 years old, Messi is about to play in his sixth World Cup, a record in the tournament's history. Argentina begins its campaign against Algeria this Tuesday (16), and both the coaching staff and teammates made it clear that the number 10's influence remains intact.

"Not just the Argentines, I believe everyone wants to see him on the field, they want to see him play," said Scaloni, confirming that the striker has recovered from a recent muscle injury and should be among the starters.

Messi was on the bench during the 2-0 victory over Honduras in a friendly on June 6, but came on in the second half of the 3-0 victory over Iceland last week, scoring one of the goals from the penalty spot.

Scaloni rejected any idea that the star's presence could represent a burden for the South American team. According to him, Messi's impact has remained fundamental over the years, regardless of his physical conditions.

"He was always present and was always fundamental for us. And now, even more so", declared the coach.

Long-time teammate of the number 10, Otamendi, who is also expected to compete in his last World Cup, recalled the path shared with Messi, including winning the world title in Qatar in 2022.

"We lived many beautiful moments together," said the 38-year-old defender.

"He is a simple person, who enjoys training periods and prepares for it. But he is also a natural competitor. This makes you want to constantly evolve, not relax, be by his side, support him and help him."

The expectation is that Messi will once again lead Argentina in the search for another world title, starting their journey against Algeria in the group stage.
