Mel Gibson completes filming for 'The Passion of the Christ' sequel

Actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson, 70, said that "The Resurrection of Christ", sequel to "The Passion of the Christ" (2004), is his life's work. The director said he believes the project is "something powerful" and the result of more than two decades of dedication.

In a statement released after the production's recordings concluded, Mel, who also directed the original feature film about the last days of Jesus Christ, gave special thanks to the cast and crew.

"I am deeply grateful to my incredibly talented cast and crew for pouring their hearts into this production. Together, we created something powerful.

This film represents a huge part of my life's work and demanded everything from me as a director and as an artist", he declared.

The star added that he sees the project as a personal mission, cultivated since the release of "The Passion of the Christ", which became a worldwide box office success and one of the most talked about religious productions in contemporary cinema.

"It's much more than a film for me. It's a mission I've carried for over twenty years to tell what I believe to be the most important story of humanity," he said.

Mel also celebrated the partnership with members of the team from the 2004 film.

"Reuniting with many of the original collaborators on 'The Passion of the Christ' - true masters of their craft - allowed us to bring this story to the screen exactly as I envisioned it," he added.

The film will be divided into two parts. The first premiere is scheduled for May 6, 2027, while the second will hit theaters on May 25, 2028, dates that coincide with the Feast of the Ascension in the Christian calendar.
