Meet Roberto Agut, João Fonseca's opponent in his Wimbledon debut
João Fonseca begins his campaign at Wimbledon next Monday (29), no earlier than 11:30 am (Brasília time), in the first round of the competition's singles bracket. His first opponent in the English Grand Slam will be Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, currently 163rd in the ATP rankings.
At 38 years old, Roberto is in the last season of his career. "I have been living a dream for many years. I gave everything I had in each training session and in each match. Now I feel that the time has come to start saying goodbye, to enjoy each tournament in a different way and to end this phase of my life with gratitude for my beloved tennis", said the tennis player to the ATP website.
The Spaniard occupied ninth place in the singles rankings in 2019, months after reaching the semifinal stage at Wimbledon. On that occasion, he fell to Serbian Novak Djokovic, who won the match 3 sets to 1 (6/2, 4/6, 6/3 and 6/2).
Bautista Agut, in fact, has three good results against the Serbian tennis player: one in 2016 and two in the 2019 season. On all three occasions, Djokovic occupied the first position in the ATP rankings.
This will be the first duel between Fonseca and Roberto Bautista Agut on the international circuit. Whoever wins the match faces the winner of the game between Jesper de Jong, number 74 in the world, and Rinky Hijikata, number 83.
