João Fonseca defeated Norwegian Casper Ruud by 3 sets to 1, this Sunday (31), and qualified for the quarterfinals of Roland Garros. In the next stage, the Brazilian tennis player will face the Czech Jakub Mensik, currently 27th in the ATP rankings.

Mensik reached this stage of the French Grand Slam after defeating Russian Andrey Rublev 3-2, 6/3, 7/6 [8/6], 4/6, 2/6 and 6/3. This is already the 20-year-old athlete's best campaign in tournaments at this level in his career.

His greatest achievement, to date, was the Miami Masters 1000, won last year. In the big decision, Jakub beat Serbian Novak Djokovic by 2 sets to 0. This season, the Czech holds the ATP 250 title in Auckland and a triumph over Jannik Sinner in Qatar.

Jakub Mensik and Fonseca have only faced each other on the court once. In the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals, a competition aimed at the best young people on the circuit, the Brazilian beat his rival 3-2, in splits of 3/4, 4/3, 4/3, 3/4 and 4/3.

On the other occasion in which they were face to face in a group, the Czech was injured and was unable to play in the round of 16 of the 2025 ATP 500 in Basel, an event in which the 19-year-old from Rio de Janeiro became champion.

The confrontation between João and Mensik does not yet have a set date and time. The singles quarterfinals at Roland Garros should take place on June 2nd and 3rd.
