To play the Greek king Odysseus in "The Odyssey", Matt Damon had to make a sudden change in his diet and exercise routine.

The 55-year-old actor has already said that the production, which premieres on July 16 in Brazil, was the most challenging of his career and required a total change of lifestyle.

One of the things he gave up to "get ripped and muscular" was cutting out gluten consumption for two years.

"I had no idea how much it was affecting me. My life has completely changed in the last two years that I've stopped eating it," he said in an interview with the podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler.

Even after almost a year after filming ended, Damon said he didn't eat the food again. However, he admits that the change was uncomfortable.

He said in another interview with the New Heights podcast, in January, that he weighed around 90 kilos at the beginning and that he weighed 76 kilos with the changes.

"I'm a big fan of bread and beer and pasta and pizza and all that," he joked. "But I feel better."

According to him, the focus on the new lifestyle has never been as intense as preparing to live Odysseus. In the past, the actor said he always let other commitments get in the way of planning.

"Now, there was no planning and now it was like 'that's it'. Just put the pedal to the metal and that's it. And that's the only way to do it, and eat a little less."

The film is one of the most anticipated releases of the year and is by Christopher Nolan, who directed successful Hollywood films such as "Oppenheimer" (2023) and "Interstellar", which also features Damon.

The rest of the cast is made up of Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland and Elliot Page.
