The elimination of the Brazilian team in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup could mark the end of a cycle for one of the most experienced players in the squad. After the 2 x 1 defeat to Norway, this Sunday (5), at MetLife Stadium, in New Jersey, defender Marquinhos, revealed by Corinthians, gave an interview and took responsibility for the result, in addition to indicating that he is unlikely to be in the next edition of the World Cup.
Team captain during the competition, the defender stated that more experienced athletes need to take responsibility for the team's performance and asked for support from Brazilian fans for the new generation that will start the next cycle.

"I, as captain, and the older players have to take the blame so that the next generations can have peace of mind to work. It's a cycle that will start from now on. We ask them to be patient with the younger players, to give them a lot of support from now on. Now it's time to learn from the lesson, apologize to the Brazilian people, to everyone who came here and witnessed this. I think it's about learning from mistakes and, for those who stay, for the next generations, I ask the people to support us now. It's four years so they can work to achieve great things in the next World Cup."
Brazil ended its participation in the World Cup after being beaten by the Norwegians 2 x 1. The team led by Carlo Ancelotti reached the round of 16 after advancing to the top of Group C and eliminating Japan in the previous phase.
In the decisive match, Bruno Guimarães wasted a penalty kick in the first half, saved by goalkeeper Nyland. In the second half, Haaland scored both goals for Norway, while Neymar scored for Brazil, also from a penalty, in the final minutes.
Marquinhos' statement drew attention because it indicated the possibility of leaving the Seleção before the 2030 World Cup. At 32 years old, the defender has worn the national team's shirt for more than a decade and participated in the 2018, 2022 and 2026 editions of the tournament, in addition to five editions of the Copa América.
Revealed in the Corinthians youth categories, Marquinhos was part of the 2012 Libertadores champion squad before being traded to Roma, in Italy. The following year, he was signed by Paris Saint-Germain, where he built a distinguished career, winning national and continental titles and consolidating himself as one of the main defenders in European football.
With 110 appearances for the Brazilian national team, the defender ended Brazil's participation in the World Cup as team captain and left his future open with the green and yellow shirt after elimination.
