Hundreds of people died and thousands were injured in Venezuela after two strong consecutive earthquakes hit the country.
The strong earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 occurred 39 seconds apart, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). fear of new aftershocks, while rescue and recovery operations continue in Caracas and other affected areas, such as the state of La Guaira.
The USGS stated that there is a greater than 99% probability that aftershocks of magnitude 3 or greater will occur during the next week, with between 150 and 860 tremors being more likely.

The double earthquake occurred "as a result of a shallow horizontal strike-slip fault near the complex boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates," explained the USGS.
"This movement occurs primarily through a major dextral strike-slip fault system that traverses northern Venezuela."
The location of the earthquake, its shallow depth (10.0 km), and the dextral horizontal slip mechanism are compatible with a rupture along this plate boundary system, specifically the fault system of Boconó, said the USGS.
Faced with the possibility of new aftershocks, the USGS recommended that the population remain alert and look for a safe place in the event of a high-intensity tremor.
Many people are choosing to set up tents in the streets due to fear of new aftershocks or the collapse of damaged buildings.
Others sleep on mattresses, mats or on sheets in gardens and sidewalks while they wait to find out if they will be able to return to their homes.
