Man dies after being attacked by 4.5 meter shark in Australia

A man died after being attacked by a shark while fishing off the coast of the state of Western Australia, police said on Saturday. It was the third fatal shark attack recorded in the country in just three weeks.

The victim, aged 35, was attacked this Saturday morning (6) while underwater fishing with family members in the southern coastal region of the state, near Michaelmas Island, near the city of Albany, about 388 km south of the state capital, Perth, according to police.

The man was taken to the coast, where he received treatment from paramedics, but succumbed to his injuries.
State authorities reported that a shark approximately 4.5 meters long, of a species not yet identified, was seen by a person near Michaelmas Island, a nature reserve that receives few visitors.

On May 24, a 39-year-old man died after being attacked by a shark while fishing in the Great Barrier Reef region. This death occurred just ten days after another 38-year-old man was fatally attacked near an island near Perth.
According to data from conservation groups, there are around 20 shark attacks a year in Australia, but the vast majority are not fatal. The number of people who drown on the country's beaches is significantly higher.
