Man arrested after climbing and spray-painting 140-meter tower in Australia

Australian police arrested a man this Tuesday (7) after he allegedly climbed a 140-meter-high tower, which is located on a bridge, in the city of Melbourne, and painted a giant cartoon-style bird on it.

An Instagram account that posted images of the Bolte Bridge, not far from the city's financial center, showed a man with his legs dangling from the top of the tower.

In later posts, he demanded higher taxes in Australia and asked for a peanut butter sandwich to be delivered by drone before he descended.

The demand provoked a standoff with the police, who, in turn, closed a lane of the bridge, hampering traffic for those traveling to work.

Paul Hogan, acting police sergeant, said a 22-year-old man was arrested after stepping off the bridge.

"The man allegedly spray-painted an external wall. During the morning, he refused to follow the police's instructions and come down", added the sergeant.

A police statement said significant resources had been mobilized to the scene, including uniformed police officers, highway patrol officers, a critical incident response team, search and rescue teams and marine police.

The graffiti on the bridge is very reminiscent of "Pam the Bird", a symbol that has appeared on dozens of buildings in Melbourne in recent years, including the listed Flinders Street railway station.

A man appeared in court last year charged with more than 200 offences, many of them relating to previous incidents of graffiti with the signature "Pam the Bird."

The police statement did not mention what ultimately convinced the man to get down.
