Cambridgeshire police said officers were called following reports of an incident at Johnsons of Old Hurst, a zoo near Huntingdon, which resulted in the child being inside the enclosure.
The child was taken to hospital with serious injuries and is in a critical but stable condition, police said. A 30-year-old man was arrested.
"We are currently speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time of this distressing incident to better understand the circumstances. (...) We do not believe that the arrested man and the child knew each other," said Detective Inspector Verity McCann.
The zoo did not make an official statement about the case until the last update of this report. On its website, the zoo states that the family farm's interest in conservation led to a fascination with crocodiles.
This report is being updated.
