Mairu Kuady, activist and researcher of Brazilian indigenous peoples, dies

Indigenous activist and researcher Mairu Hakuwi Kuady Karajá died last Sunday (14), and his body was laid to rest on Monday night (15) at the Anglican Cathedral in Brasília.

The activist was born in the São Domingos-Krehawã Indigenous Land, in Mato Grosso, and worked in favor of the culture of the original peoples. The causes of death were not disclosed.

He was dedicated to studying indigenous rights in national and international spaces. Mairu was a doctoral student in France, after graduating in International Relations at UFT (Federal University of Tocantins) and a master's degree in Law at UnB (University of Brasília).

In a statement, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples mourned the death and paid tribute to the activist. According to the ministry, Mairu was seen as a reference for young indigenous people from different peoples as he was seen with relevance in academic and institutional spaces.

"In this moment of pain and farewell, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples sympathizes with their family, friends, research colleagues and the entire Karajá people, wishing them strength and comfort in the face of this irreparable loss. May their memory, their intellectual legacy and their commitment to indigenous peoples remain alive, inspiring current and future generations", stated the ministry.

Apib (Association of indigenous peoples of Brazil) also paid tribute to the activist and stated that Mairu will continue to be the voice of her people.

On social networks, Mairu shared her experiences abroad, academic achievements and her routine as an indigenous person within the academy.
