Rio de Janeiro recorded a magnitude 3.3 tremor off the state's coast, near the municipality of Maricá, at 5:31 am this Thursday (21). The information was confirmed by the Brazilian Seismographic Network (RSBR).

The earthquake was recorded by stations of the Brazilian Seismographic Network (RSBR) and analyzed by the Seismology Center at USP (University of São Paulo).

According to the network responsible for monitoring seismicity throughout the national territory, the activities that the National Observatory has carried out to reactivate transmission in its stations made it possible to quickly locate the event.

According to the seismologist at the National Observatory and RSBR, Dr. Gilberto Leite, this type of event is common in Brazil and does not represent a significant risk to the population.

"Brazil records small earthquakes with a certain frequency, especially due to the tectonic tensions that act on the Earth's crust. In most cases, these tremors are of low magnitude and are not felt", he explains.

The expert also explains that the region is one of the most prone to the phenomenon in the country.

"The southeastern margin of Brazil, in particular, is considered the country's main offshore seismic zone, where small earthquakes occur relatively frequently."
