Madonna reveals reason for Universal's cancellation of the biopic: "It needed a high budget"

Madonna finally clarified the reasons that led to the cancellation of the long-awaited biopic about her life, which was being developed by Universal Pictures. The iconic queen of pop revealed that the main obstacle to the project was a disagreement with the studio regarding the budget needed for production. Since 2020, Madonna had been working on the idea of turning her career into a biographical film, with actress Julia Garner cast to play the singer. For two years, she dedicated herself to preparing the script and actively participated in negotiations with Universal, involving producers and the technical team to budget and plan the film. However, after three years without concrete progress, the project was officially discarded. In a recent interview with Interview Magazine, Madonna opened up about the disagreement she had with Universal. According to her, the main issue was the studio's refusal to accept the high budget that she considered essential to portray her life in a faithful and grand way. "I should make a film about my life. I worked on the script for two years and spent that time at Universal Studios with producers, taking care of the budget and the cast. We had a fight, Universal and I, because of the budget", explained the artist. Madonna highlighted that her life was marked by extraordinary events and, therefore, required a corresponding investment. "My life was huge, so I needed a big budget. You know what I mean?" he said. Universal, however, was unable to understand the need for this amount, which led to an impasse. To try to get around the situation, Madonna suggested filming the film in Serbia, where costs would be lower than in Hollywood. Even so, the studio doubted her commitment to staying in the country for filming. "Maybe they just didn't believe me. One of their first reactions was: 'We don't believe you would stay in Serbia for more than four days'. And I replied: 'Did you read the script? My whole life has been a fight for survival. I'm not going there on vacation'", he recalled. In addition to the project with Universal, Madonna tried to make a biographical series possible in partnership with Netflix and director Shawn Levy, but this initiative did not advance either. These setbacks led the singer to focus on her music, which resulted in the release of her new album "Confessions on a Dancefloor II", scheduled for July 3rd. This work is the continuation of the classic 2005 album, which brought hits such as "Hung Up". Singles such as "Love Sensation", "I Feel So Free" and "Bring Your Love" have already been released, the latter in collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter. Madonna's revelation about the biopic's cancellation highlights the difficulties artists face when trying to bring their stories to the big screen, especially when the creative vision requires significant investment. The singer remains steadfast in her musical career, showing that, even in the face of obstacles, her art continues to evolve and conquer new audiences.
