Lula should contact Putin to discuss the war in Ukraine

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) must contact the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, to discuss the war in Ukraine. According to CNN, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, had asked the PT member to speak this week on the sidelines of the G7 Summit.

Lula plans a phone call to Putin. But assistants also discuss the possibility of preparing a face-to-face meeting between the Brazilian and Russian presidents - which could take place at BRICS or G20 meetings in the second half of the year.

The PT member will ask in the contact that Putin speak directly with Zelensky and engage in dialogue about a ceasefire or a peace agreement. The Ukrainian wants the conversation to take place remotely or in person on neutral territory.

The idea, however, is to organize an agenda for contact with Putin that also involves topics of bilateral interest between Brazil and Russia. Cooperation issues in the area of energy and fertilizers, for example, may be on the table.

Members of the Brazilian government assess that Zelensky's request is due to the fact that Lula maintains dialogue with Putin and, simultaneously, dialogues with other nations. On a previous occasion, Zelensky had already made a similar request to the Brazilian leader. Lula consulted Putin, who refused to speak to his opponent.

A Ukrainian presidential advisor confirmed this Friday (19) that Zelensky accepted an offer from Lula to help negotiate a peace agreement with Russia.

At the G7 in Évian-les-Bains, on Wednesday (17), the Ukrainian leader asked allied countries to increase pressure on Russia to put an end to the conflict, which has lasted more than four years.

In the bilateral conversation, Lula proposed a series of alternatives, including contacts with the permanent members of the UN Security Council, Ukraine's presidential communications advisor, Dmytro Lytvyn, told journalists.
