Lula reiterates solidarity with Venezuela after deadly earthquakes

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) began his speech at the Mercosur summit this Tuesday (30) reiterating solidarity with the people and government of Venezuela. The South American country was hit by strong earthquakes, which left more than 1,700 dead and thousands injured.

"Tragedies like this invite us to reflect on the importance of regional solidarity and cooperation", said the PT member.

There was also a minute of silence for the victims of Venezuela before the Mercosur meeting at Lula's request.

On the day that the earthquakes hit Venezuelan territory, on June 24, Lula had already published a message on social media expressing support for the neighboring country.

Brazil participates in search and rescue efforts for missing people in Venezuela, in addition to supporting authorities in caring for victims.

José Múcio, Brazilian Defense Minister, went to the capital Caracas to discuss the situation with Venezuelan authorities. He is expected to meet with President Delcy Rodriguez.

Brazil sets up field hospital in Venezuela
In an exclusive interview with CNN Brasil, Glivânia Maria de Oliveira, Brazilian ambassador to Venezuela, stated that the Navy's field hospital is already operating in the La Guaira region, one of the areas most affected by the earthquakes.

According to the diplomat, the structure is already operational and has the capacity to carry out up to 100 services per day, expanding assistance to victims of the tragedy.

Oliveira also noted that more than 130 Brazilians are working on the front line of search and rescue operations.

This includes firefighters, military personnel, healthcare professionals and logistical support teams.
