Lula must criticize "protectionist measures" in the G7 without citing tariffs

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is expected to criticize "unilateral" and "protectionist" measures at the G7 Summit, without mentioning the United States' tariffs, according to sources at Palácio do Planalto. The leaders' meeting takes place in Évian-les-Bains, France, on the 16th and 17th of this month.

With Donald Trump present, Lula will not make explicit mention of tariffs, but will give messages, guarantee Brazilian diplomats. The assessment is that there is no place, in a multilateral summit, for targeted criticisms such as those that the PT member addresses in speeches in Brazil.

There is no forecast, until this Saturday (13), of a bilateral between the representatives on the margins of the Summit. The Palácio do Planalto decided not to request a new meeting, on the grounds that there is no motivation for such a meeting, given the recent meeting between Lula and Trump at the White House.

In this way, a prepared meeting - like the one that took place in Malaysia in October 2025 - is practically ruled out by Planalto. A fortuitous and punctual conversation, more similar to the contact at the UN General Assembly (United Nations) in September, is still a possibility.

Since the White House meeting, at least three episodes have shaken the relationship between the countries' governments: the US classification of Brazilian criminal factions as terrorists, and the threat of taxation of 25% under "section 301" and 12.5% for alleged lack of control over forced labor.

The president leaves for France on Sunday (15). At the G7, Lula will return to the central idea of his speeches at G20 and Brics summits: that emerging countries need more space in global debate spaces.

Brazil will participate in sessions open to guests. On Tuesday (16), the discussion will be about international partnerships. On Wednesday (17), the theme will be balanced economic growth. That same day, there will be a lunch dedicated to discussing the actions and accountability of big techs.

Bilateral meetings are also planned. So far, meetings have been confirmed between Lula and the Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, who is hosting the event.
