President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) met this Monday (29) with the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), and delivered the bill that increases the revenue ceiling for individual microentrepreneurs (MEIs) to have different tax treatment.
The ceiling will go from around R$80,000 per year to R$140,000, in stages, until 2028. According to Motta, who published about the meeting with President Lula on social media, the increase to R$110,000 will already occur in 2027.
The limits of the other categories of Simples Nacional should not be corrected. The full government proposal has not yet been released.
Also according to the President of the Chamber, the readjustment of the ceiling "is part of a direct negotiation" for the approval of the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) that establishes the end of the 6x1 scale.
At the end of May, the Chamber approved the PEC that reduces the working day from 44 hours to 40 hours per week within up to 14 months. The text still needs to be voted on by the Senate.

The central defense of the project is that MEIs can help reduce the workforce deficit that will be generated by the reduction in working hours.
Hiring an additional employee
The government's proposal also allows MEIs to hire an employee. Currently, microentrepreneurs can only have collaborators.
There is already a bill being processed in the National Congress on the subject. The 2021 text has already been approved by the Senate and is being analyzed in the Chamber. He proposes increasing the MEI limit from R$81,000 to up to R$130,000 per year, also allowing the hiring of one more employee.

By handing the project over to the President of the Chamber, the government signals that it wants to take a leading role in the discussion and get closer to the category.
