Lula leads Conselhão meeting and should ask for help against US tariffs

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) participates, this Wednesday (10), in a meeting of the Council for Sustainable Economic and Social Development, the Conselhão. It is the seventh meeting of the collegiate since it was recreated in 2023.

On this occasion, Lula must take stock of the government's activities. The main topic of the conversation, however, should revolve around the tariffs imposed on Brazil by the United States.

Donald Trump's government proposed the application of a 25% tariff on Brazilian goods due to alleged unfair practices in the relationship between Brazil and the United States, as well as 12.5% on countries that, according to the Republican administration, do not combat forced labor.

According to CNN, the president will appeal to businesspeople to act against the threat of an increase in the import tariff on Brazilian products.

The president's idea is for the private sector to clarify to North American businesspeople that the Donald Trump government's arguments against Brazil are baseless.

Lula will also reinforce his position in defense of national sovereignty and must repeat his criticism of senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic

At the meeting, which brings together businesspeople and trade unionists, the president must also reaffirm that he counts on the private sector if he is re-elected for a fourth term, with structural reforms and investments in infrastructure.

The meeting should be the president's last before the electoral process. Therefore, the idea is to thank the partnerships between the public and private sectors over the last three years.

Council
The Council, made up of representatives of civil society, is responsible for advising the President of the Republic on the formulation of public policies and government guidelines.

This Wednesday's meeting is scheduled to take place at the Itamaraty Palace, starting at 9 am, and, in addition to Lula, should be attended by vice-president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), the minister of the Secretariat of Institutional Relations, José Guimarães, and the first lady Janja da Silva.

In addition to a review of the group's work in recent years, there will also be a panel to debate the international agenda with regard to the country's economic, social and sustainable development.
