Lula: Government will try to recover refineries, but not at the asking price

The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), said this Wednesday (27) that the Brazilian government will "try to recover the privatized oil refineries", but will not "buy them at the price they want". The statement was made during a ceremony to announce Petrobras' investments in Amazonas.

Lula was already at the end of his speech when one of those present started talking to him, off the microphone. From what was possible to hear in the broadcast made by EBC, the person shouted: "Lula, come back with the refinery."

The president then addressed the person who made the request and explained himself.

"We've already brought back Fafen (Nitrogenated Fertilizer Factory) in Bahia, we're going to bring back Fafen in Sergipe. We're going to try to recover the refineries that they privatized, but we can't buy them at the price they want. Petrobras can't give money to people if it doesn't have a fair price. But, if it's up to us, I dream of a lot of things for Petrobras," he said.

Lula also said, jokingly, that Petrobras should team up with Pemex, the Mexican state-owned oil and gas company, to prospect for oil in the Gulf of Mexico.

He said, in a reference to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, that he wanted to see if his "fellow Trump" would "get involved" in the matter.

He mentioned that the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, talked about the subject.

"Magda (Chambriard, president of Petrobras), go there (to Mexico). Let's form an association with Pemex and go to the Gulf of Mexico to see if comrade Trump will get involved with Petrobras prospecting", said Lula, in a good-humored tone.
