Lula congratulates Keiko Fujimori on victory in Peru's election

Keiko was confirmed as the winner of the country's presidential election later today, defeating left-wing deputy Roberto Sánchez in a tight race.

Daughter of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori, Keiko won the election after losing three times in the second round.

Despite the newly elected president being considered right-wing, Lula celebrated the relationship between the countries.

"Peru is a sister country, with which Brazil shares an extensive border and deep human ties. We are ready to advance an ambitious bilateral agenda, focused on expanding trade and investment, integrating logistical and digital infrastructure, overcoming hunger and poverty, protecting the Amazon and combating transnational organized crime."

The president concluded the congratulations by reinforcing that Keiko counts on Brazil to build together "a more prosperous, integrated, democratic and sovereign South America".

Lula's greetings come from a redesign of his foreign policy in South America. Due to the advance of the right, as CNN found, the federal administration foresees the emptying of international forums and is betting on bilateral relations with neighbors.

Despite the differences, Brazilian diplomacy sees in "pragmatism" a margin for action by the continent's new leaders.

Abelardo de la Espriella, right-winger and new president of Colombia, for example, responded friendly to a message in which Lula congratulated him on the election.

"Brazil is our neighbor, and our people are united [...] Colombia, in freedom and order, under my leadership, will seek a single objective: to fulfill the alliance with the people that is not one of ideology, but of extreme coherence, and which includes our neighbors in Brazil, led by its president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva", he wrote.

In addition to Keio and Espriella, José Antonio Kast - president of Chile -, Rodrigo Paz - Bolivian president - and Daniel Noboa - president of Colombia - demonstrated such pragmatism.

This week, for example, Lula met bilaterally with Kast and Paz during the Mercosur summit.

The only exception mentioned by diplomats is Javier Milei, from Argentina. Brazil has seen a shift away from its bilateral relationship with its neighbor since the right-winger assumed the presidency, forming a closer relationship with pre-candidate for president Flávio Bolsonaro (PL).
