Lula appeals to Alcolumbre for a vote on the Security PEC in the Senate

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) appealed to the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), to guide the vote on the PEC (Proposed Constitutional Amendment) on Public Security. The text has been stuck at Casa Alta for at least 2 months.

"I'm waiting for the Senate, I'm even appealing to President Alcolumbre, put the Security PEC to vote so that this country will definitively solve the public security problem", said Lula this Friday (22) in an interview with the program "Sem Censura", on TV Brasil.

PEC 8 of 2025 is one of the main objectives of the Federal Government in the National Congress, aiming to combat organized crime as one of the assets with popular appeal for the October elections.

Pre-candidates for Planalto who occupied governor's seats, such as Ronaldo Caiado (PSD) and Romeu Zema (Novo), demonstrate in their speeches that they wish to take the public security agenda for themselves, in an attempt to rival the current PT administration. Caiado has already stated that Lula "handed Brazil over to the factions" and that the project sent by the government is "inadmissible".

"Some governors don't want us to approve the PEC because they don't want us to interfere. The police are a piece of power that no government wants to give up. Here in Rio de Janeiro you know that, you know what I'm talking about", said Lula.

To demonstrate the "pro-security" discourse, the Federal Government simultaneously launched a program called "Brazil Program against Organized Crime". The package foresees investments of R$ 11 billion, divided into four axes: financial combat against factions, strengthening the prison system, increasing the resolution of crimes and combating arms trafficking.

As CNN showed, government senators signal that Alcolumbre does not intend to guide the project sent by the Executive anytime soon. There is a collective effort in the political articulation of Planalto to bring about a rapprochement between Lula and Alcolumbre.

Both are experiencing a moment of tension since the rejection of Jorge Messias' nomination for a vacancy on the STF (Supreme Federal Court) and the fall of the presidential veto of Dosimetry - the bill that reduces sentences for those convicted of the acts of January 8, 2023.
