Louvre Museum: water leak affects gallery with most valuable works; Mona Lisa was not affected

The Denon gallery of the Louvre Museum, where the most valuable paintings are exhibited, was hit by a water leak on Thursday night (12). The area of Da Vinci's famous Mona Lisa was not affected, a union representative told Reuters on Friday.
"Due to a technical failure on the upper floor overnight, the area is closed to the public and scaffolding has been installed," the representative said.

A museum spokesperson had no immediate comment on the incident.
The leak occurred in room 707, where paintings by French artist Charles are on display. Meynier, from the 19th century, and the Italian artist Bernardino Luini, from the 16th century. No assessment of the possible damage was available as of noon on Friday, according to the union representative.
The water leak is the second in less than three months at a museum that has experienced a series of recent setbacks - including a spectacular jewelry theft, strikes and a ticket fraud investigation - that have placed its management under intense scrutiny.
