Le Pen's conviction was upheld in France; unreadability time is reduced

A French appeals court upheld the conviction of ultra-right leader Marine Le Pen for misuse of European Union funds, but reduced the period of ineligibility, paving the way for her to contest the 2027 presidential election.

However, the court ordered Le Pen to serve a three-year prison sentence. Although it suspended two years of the sentence, the court ordered the use of an electronic ankle bracelet for one year, making a presidential campaign difficult from both a political and logistical point of view.

The decision raises new questions about her pursuit of France's top job next year.
