♬ In the two minutes of "O funk of RJ will never die", biographical spoken track that opens the album "Universo 150", Kevin O Chris tells how he discovered funk in the Rio de Janeiro city of Duque de Caxias (RJ) - where the artist was born on December 5, 1997 - and how he made the genre a standard and a guide in life.
At 30 years old, Kevin de Oliveira Zanoni has been one of the main names in 150 BPM funk since 2018, although the artist's already vast discography also contains forays into the more traditional drumzão roots beat.
The title "Universo 150" alludes precisely to the speed of the beat with the ambition of portraying 150 BPM funk as a particular universe. "It's culture, it's identity, it's movement", celebrates Kevin in the introductory text of this album, which can also be characterized as an EP due to the short duration - a mere 24 minutes - of the 12 tracks, half of which are less than two minutes long.
"My idea was to sing the melody at 75 BPM and then transpose it to 150", explains the artist, arguing that, in this idea, lies the identity of the funk to which he gives voice.
Strictly speaking an album with EP speed, "Universo 150" has been in rotation since yesterday, July 2nd, and keeps Kevin's status unchanged, offering ammunition for both those who love the artist and funk and those who hate Chris and funk.
Produced by Kevin O Chris himself, the album gravitates around a particular universe in which themes of more or less explicit sexual content, such as "Em mim" and "Taquei firm dela" (recorded with DJ Xande), are recurrent and naturalized since funk is funk, even written from a sexist perspective in which women are almost always objectified as a mere instrument of male pleasure. Bahian "Milla" (Manno Góes and Tuca Fernandes, 1995), an axé music standard popularized on a national scale in the voice of singer Netinho in a live recording from 1996. Over the melody of "Milla", Kevin wrote the lyrics for "Ô vida", the name of the second track on the album, the first phonographic release by the funk artist from Rio de Janeiro by the multinational record label Universal Music.
The initial focus of this release rightly lies on the track "Bonde das Ticas", funk with a seductive pulse that brings together Kevin O Chris and MC Rael. For those who follow Kevin's bandwagon, funks like "Sugar baby" - recorded with the support of DJ Thiago O Pica, also present on the final track "I'm going to press one from boldin" - will sound familiar.
Among themes composed solely by the funk singer and in partnership with the trapper Gbzin in "Falar por fala" (a track with a more melodic contour), Kevin O Chris remains faithful to the universe that sustains him and identifies him in the world of funk from Rio de Janeiro.
