Katy Perry says she turned anger into new song: "I walked through the fire"
Singer Katy Perry, 41, said she decided to channel feelings she spent a long time trying to repress into music. The American star said that her new single, "Watch It Burn", was born from a process of embracing her own anger after "one of the most difficult years" of her life.
In 2025, the artist separated from actor Orlando Bloom, 49, with whom she has daughter Daisy, 5. Now, in a preview of her participation in the podcast "Unfamous with Justin Tranter", whose full interview will be released this Wednesday (17), Katy explained that the song shows her facing her own dark side after a challenging phase.
"In 'Watch It Burn,' I'm fighting my darkness. But the past year has been very difficult. I've spent my entire life not allowing myself to feel angry in situations where I should have been angry as hell. What I did was repress it all.
I have the right to be pissed off for a moment," she said of the track, which will be released on June 26th.
"So instead of falling into that 'poor me' thing, I thought, 'Let's feel this damn pain. Let's feel this pain. Let's feel this anger. Let's move on. And also learn from this.'"
In an appearance at the "Tribeca Festival" in New York on the 8th, Katy - who is currently in a relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, 54 - admitted that there were times when she thought she couldn't move on.
The pop star reported that she found strength in the commitments she made to herself, her daughter and the public that has supported her for more than two decades.
"Last year was probably one of the hardest years of my life and I went through a lot of sh*t. There were some really, really hard days, and I kept going because I made a promise to my fans, to my daughter and to myself. I walked through fire... If you're going through hell, keep walking," she declared during a press conference.
