Kane makes history, England beats Panama and ends Group L at the top
England beat Panama 2-0 this Saturday (27) and closed the group stage at the top of group L of the 2026 World Cup with 7 points, after two wins and a draw.
With the result obtained at the MetLife Stadium, in New Jersey, the English team faces Senegal so far in the 16th round of the knockout stage. The duel is scheduled for next Friday, July 1st, in Atlanta, in the United States.
The second place in the group went to Croatia, who also beat Ghana this Saturday and finished with 6 points. The Africans take 4 and advance as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
The Panamanian team, on the other hand, was already eliminated and ended its participation in the World Cup without scoring after three defeats.
Harry Kane makes history
The winning goals were scored by number 10 Jude Bellingham and top scorer Harry Kane, all in the second half.
The goal scored places the number 9 as England's top scorer in World Cups. Kane reaches 11 goals and surpasses Gary Lineker.
How the game went
The first half was completely dominated by England. Rashford was the most dangerous, risking a shot into the left corner in the 7th minute, and getting scared in stoppage time with a free kick. The Panamanians' big chance came in the 25th minute with Puma Rodríguez.
England continued on top in the second half and narrowly opened the scoring after six minutes, due to confusion on the part of the opposing defense that resulted in an own goal.
The victory for the Europeans began to be built in the 16th minute of the final stage with Jude Bellingham. The number 10 took advantage of a corner taken by Saka and stretched his leg to hit goalkeeper Mosquera's net.
The first goal gave greater peace of mind to England, who reached the second goal minutes later. At 21, Harry Kane anticipated the marking and headed home a cross from Bellingham.
Panama still scared the English and scored with Fajardo at 45, but he was offside. The result remained at 2-0 and England remains strong for the second phase.
