Julian Nagelsmann should leave command of the Germany national team, says newspaper

Coach Julian Nagelsmann will leave command of the Germany national team after their elimination in the second phase of the World Cup, according to German newspaper Bild this Friday (3).

According to the publication, Nagelsmann agreed to leave his position after a meeting lasting around three hours with directors of the German Football Federation, held on Thursday (2), at the entity's headquarters in Frankfurt.

The newspaper states that the coach was encouraged to consider a voluntary departure after presenting his assessment of Paraguay's elimination on penalties in the round of 16 of the World Cup. According to Bild, Nagelsmann will receive compensation estimated at 7 million euros (around R$41 million).

The DFB has not commented on the information so far.

The defeat to Paraguay in Boston marked Germany's third consecutive disappointing World Cup campaign. The team had been eliminated in the group stage in the 2018 and 2022 editions, four years after winning their fourth world title, in 2014.

Nagelsmann took charge of the team in 2023 and became the youngest coach to lead a team in a World Cup knockout stage in the last 40 years.

After the elimination, however, the coach had ruled out the possibility of resigning.

"I'm not the kind of person who says, 'I'm going to step down' just because we were eliminated," he said at the time.
